American Music Awards 2017: Nominees, Winners and Twenty Red Carpet Looks

The 45th AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS 2017 kicked-off at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California, Sunday night. The show, hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross of BLACK-ISH fame, was broadcast live on the ABC network. Her mother, Diana Ross, was honored with the LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD.

The 73-year-old music icon dazzled in a black dress and matching silk gloves, with a striking necklace completing the look, as she took the stage soon after a pre-recorded message from former US President and First Lady, Barack and Michelle Obama, respectively. Her son Evan Ross, 29, also had a few sweet things to say about his star mom.

“This is the family. We love you so much, so very much,” she said effusively as she accepted the lifetime honor with her entire family, including her grandchildren and daughter-in-law Ashlee Simpson, alongside her. “This is all about love. This says it all, this is my family and I’m sending love out there to all of you,” she added.

The two-time AMA host went on to say that she was humbled by the recognition, repeatedly thanking one and all for the honor bestowed upon her.

“I really love being here and I feel so humbled by this. I love you all. I think you know that. Thank you so much. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Bruno Mars dominated the proceedings with eight nominations, winning seven of them including the top prize of ARTIST OF THE YEAR, followed by Drake and Ed Sheeran, who were distant seconds, relatively, with five nominations each.

However, Bruno, who was not physically present at the AMA, sent a video message in acknowledgment, “I wish I could be partying with y’all, but I’m a million miles away right now in a f—— minivan.”

Performances by Diana Ross, Lady Gaga, Nick Jonas, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Pink, Shawn Mendez, and others entertained the celebrity-packed MS Theater and live TV audiences.

Selena Gomez, 25, who made a brave appearance Sunday night after her recent kidney transplant, has been targeted by a number of home viewers – presumably, her detractors – on social media for allegedly lip-synching her hit single WOLVES.

Here’s what they said:

Her fans, however, were quick to come to her defence.
