The 41st former President George HW Bush (92) was rushed to the Houston Methodist hospital on Saturday for shortness of breath and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital on Wednesday where doctors performed a procedure to “address an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia,” Jim McGrath, a family spokesman said in a statement.

“Doctors performed a procedure to protect and clear his airway that required sedation,” McGrath said. “President Bush is stable and resting comfortably in the ICU, where he will remain for observation.”

The former First Lady, Barbara Bush (91), was hospitalized on Wednesday as a precautionary measure for fatigue and coughing McGrath explained.

She was on antibiotics for bronchitis and was responding well to the treatment as understood by McGrath’s statement later Wednesday evening.

According to McGrath the doctors have declared the procedure on the former president a success, wherein a tube was inserted to remove blockage from one lung and is making rapid progress, “yesterday, he was telling everybody he’d be out by Thursday or Friday,” he said.

President Barack Obama, former president Bill Clinton, and wife Hillary Clinton conveyed their good wishes to George and Barbara Bush.

“They are as fine a couple as we know. So we want to send our prayers and our love to them.” Barack said, while Bill Clinton wished the couple a speedy recovery and said that his thoughts were with the ailing couple and the President-elect found time to say he was “looking forward to a speedy recovery.”

Bush senior who served as the 41st U.S. President for a single term from 1989 to 1993, has been suffering from a kind of Parkinson’s syndrome for some time now and is basically immobile and has to use a wheelchair or motorized scooter for mobility.

Despite his condition, he celebrated his 90th birthday by taking part in a tandem parachute jump in Kennebunkport, Maine and just 3 days after his 92nd birthday the former president led a group of wounded soldiers on a fishing trip on his personal speedboat.

Bush has been admitted to hospitals on a few occasions before as well. In December 2014 he was hospitalized for a similar breathing issue for about a week. Before that, in 2012 he spent Christmas in an Intensive Care Unit for bronchial disorders and other issues.

Again in 2015, he was hospitalized in Maine after he fell down at his summer home and broke a bone in his neck.

The 41st former president’s office announced earlier in January that Bush and his wife Barbara would not be able to attend Trump’s inaugural ceremony due to the former president’s age and failing health.

George HW Bush is only the second president in the history of the United States, after John Adams, whose son also served as president of the country.
