Before news of the Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik break-up started doing the rounds, fans had an inkling of the trouble that was brewing in the celebrity couple’s two-year relationship, and not without reason.
It became somewhat evident that something was indeed amiss when the 25-year-old singer|songwriter, and former One Direction band member, posted a grim-looking shirtless picture of himself alongside the message, “When Life throws you lemons, catch em so they don’t hit you in the f***ing face.”
Also, fans were quick to note that the “Dusk till Dawn” singer had unfollowed his 22-year-old lady love of two years, and her mother Yolanda Hadid, on Instagram earlier on Tuesday – another indication that all was not well in paradise.
“ZAYN REALLY UNFOLLOWED GIGI IM SHOOK,” a fan wrote on social media.
Another fan tweeted that “zayn really unfollowed gigi on Instagram like he doesn’t have a whole tattoo of her eyes on his chest.”
Well, it wasn’t too long before the couple came out in the open to confirm the obvious.
“Gigi and I had an incredibly meaningful, loving and fun relationship and I have a huge amount of respect and adoration for Gigi as a woman and a friend,” Malik wrote in his Tuesday tweet.
“She has such an incredible soul. I’m grateful to all of our fans for respecting this difficult decision and our privacy at this time. We wish this news would have come from us first. We love you all.”

Soon after, Hadid followed it up with her own elucidation of the break-up, making it a point to reciprocate the magnanimity shown by Malik.
“Breakup statements often seem impersonal because there is really no way to put into words what two people experience together over a few years..not only in a relationship but in life in general,” wrote the model.
“I’m forever grateful for the love, time and life lessons Z and I shared. I want nothing but the best for him and will continue to support him as a friend that I have immense respect and love for. As for the future, whatever’s meant to be will always be. x G.”

It was The Sun that first reported the split, saying that a source close to the two had attributed the parting of ways to the star couple’s “crazy work schedules.”
“They have crazy work schedules that would put pressure on any relationship,” the source is supposed to have told The Sun.
The singer-supermodel couple was last photographed together in January as they were leaving Hadid’s home after celebrating the second anniversary of their relationship.
Rumors that Hadid and Malik had something going began in November 2015, gaining momentum after the model appeared alongside the singer in his 2016 “Pillowtalk” video.
However, it wasn’t until the Met Gala the same year that confirmation of the romance came, when Hadid and Malik walked the event’s red carpet together.
As busy as they were, the couple made it a point to take time out from their packed schedules to share common interests and do stuff together and be “each other’s best friends,” as Hadid once told ES Magazine.
“For the first time, we are both in a relationship where we have very similar interests outside of work and that is really important,” Hadid had said.
“We cook a lot together and do art together and we’re each other’s best friends. We both feel we can talk about anything and learn a lot from one another.”
Malik too was not found wanting in his appreciation of his model girlfriend, attributing their smooth relationship to Hadid’s “super” intelligence.
“She’s super intelligent; I think that’s why it works so well,” he told Elle U.K. “And we do the same type of job so we get that with each other.”
Before coming together romantically, both Hadid and Malik had been in high-profile relationships.
Zayn had been seeing fellow X Factor contestant Rebecca Ferguson, until they “mutually agreed” to go their separate ways in 2011, after having met on the show in 2010.
Malik got engaged to Little Mix star Perrie Edwards in 2013. The couple had met in early 2012. The split came in August 2015.
A HollywoodLife source close to Perrie has exclusively told the entertainment website that Perrie has mixed feelings about the breakup. While on the one hand, she is “happy” about it – saying that Malik deserved it – she is also feeling bad for him.
“Perrie is happy Zayn and Gigi have split, she feels like it serves him right. However, a big part of her does feel bad for him too,” said the HollywoodLife source.
“Even though Perrie is in a good, committed relationship herself, part of her would really like to see Zayn again and see if they have chemistry or if there is still a spark. But, she won’t reach out… not now. She doesn’t want to get involved with him again because she knows he has a dark side too, and she could easily fall prey to his demons,” added the source.
Hadid had also been in a couple of relationships before she met Hadid.
She dated Australian singer Cody Simpson intermittently for nearly two years before parting ways in May 2015.
Gigi was also in a 5-month relationship with singer/actor Joe Jonas, earning the nickname G.I. Joe while they were together.
Here’s how fans have reacted to the break-up.
