Parents to 4-year-old daughter North and 18-month-old son Saint, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have reportedly hired the services of a surrogate to carry their third child.
Delivering the baby herself could be potentially life-threatening for Kim as she has a condition known as placenta acreta. This occurs when the placenta gets abnormally attached to the muscular layer of the uterine wall (myometrium) increasing the risk of severe hemorrhaging during a vaginal delivery – hence, the decision to go the surrogate way.
“It’s something that has been in the works for a bit now,” a source close to the celebrity couple told ET. “There was always a very high risk if Kim became pregnant with a third baby, so it was never really an option. They are excited to finally add to their family.”
If the source is to be believed, nearly $70,000 will go to the surrogate agency while the surrogate mother will receive a monthly payment of $4,500 for 10 months aimed at covering the gestation period and delivery.
Furthermore, the surrogate gets $5000 for each additional baby, if any. So, if the surrogate delivers a triplet, she makes an extra $10,000. There’s more! Should the surrogate end up losing reproductive organs in the process, she will be compensated $4000.
The other non-financial clauses of the surrogacy agreement include the following:
- Total abstinence from alcohol and drugs during the entire duration of the pregnancy
- No hot tubs or sauna
- Handling of cat litter, a strict no-no
- Must not apply hair dye
- A daily limit of only one caffeinated beverage
- No raw fish
According to the agreement, Kim and Kanye will “assume the legal and parental responsibilities for any child … that may possess any congenital or other abnormalities or defects.”
In November 2015, Kim had written on her blog about the hardships she had had to endure delivering her first-born, North.
“Last pregnancy, I had a condition called preeclampsia, which is a serious condition you can get during pregnancy,” Kim had blogged.
“This is a high-risk condition that happens when the placenta grows too deeply into the uterine wall. My doctor had to stick his entire arm in me and detach the placenta with his hand, scraping it away from my uterus with his fingernails. How disgusting and painful!!! My mom was crying; she had never seen anything like this before. My delivery was fairly easy, but then going through that—it was the most painful experience of my life! They gave me a second epidural but we were racing against time, so I just had to deal.”
On the April 2 episode of ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ Kim had made public her desire to further expand her family admitting to her mother that she would have to “explore surrogacy” as she had come to the “conclusion that I can’t carry another one.”
“I’d just love nothing more than to expand my family and just know that I have this world at home that’s safe,” Kim had revealed in the episode. “And if for some reason I left this earth sooner than I really wanted to, then my kids would have a support system at home so that I know that they would be OK if I wasn’t here.”
The news of the surrogacy deal broke on Wednesday (June 21, 2017), the day Kardashian launched her first make-up line, “KKW Beauty,” selling out all the 300,000 units of her $48 Crème Contour & Highlight Kit within three hours of the product going on sale.
The kits come in four different shades and include a contour pen, a highlight pen, and a double-ended blending brush.
All of the Contour & Highlight Kits have sold out!!!
