Releasing worldwide on November 17, 2017, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows, BATTLEFRONT 2 is different from its predecessor in that it features a full campaign story, with the game’s single-player protagonist, Iden Versio, commander of the Imperial Special Forces group known as INFERNO SQUAD, getting involved in a number of events in the three decades preceding THE FORCE AWAKENS .
Developed by EA DICE, Criterion Games, and Motive Studios, BATTLEFRONT 2 is a clear attempt at addressing all the drawbacks and criticism of the original BATTLEFRONT that saw the light of day in 2015.
Certain segments of the story allow the player to control other STAR WARS characters, including Luke Skywalker, Kylo Ren, Chewbacca, Emperor Palpatine, Leia, and even campaign protagonist Iden Versio.
Some of the main features of the new BF2 are:
- A single-player mode
- A customizable character class system
- Content based on the movies THE FORCE AWAKENS and THE LAST JEDI.
- BF2 features vehicles and locations from the original, prequel and sequel STAR WARS trilogies
- It allows control of STAR WARS heroes and villains including Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian, Yoda, Rey, Poe Dameron, Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, Boba Fett, Bossk, Iden Versio, Darth Maul, and Kylo Ren.
- Free DLC (downloadable content) provided to players with free EA account
STARWARS BATTLEFRONT 2 comes with five multiplayer game modes supporting a maximum of 40 players at a time. The five modes are:
Galactic Assault: The Galactic Assault mode features eleven planets and locations from the prequel, original, and sequel STAR WARS trilogies, with twenty attackers against twenty defenders.
Starfighter Assault: Starfighter Assault features teams of twelve attackers and twelve defenders, with an additional 20 AI Ships for each team. Here, the battles take place in space and planetary atmospheres.
Strikes: This mode is all about close quarter battle scenarios between eight attackers and eight defenders, with the aggressors trying to capture the flag from the defenders.
Heroes vs. Villains: In this particular mode, four heroes from the Light Side faceoff against four Dark Side villains in a team deathmatch. The teams are based on STAR WARS movie characters.
Blast: Blast is the final multiplayer mode featuring two ten-player teams, each battling to achieve 100 eliminations before the rival team can.
The single-player campaign in BF2 features Admiral Garrick Versio’s daughter Iden Versio, Commander of the Inferno Squad – a commando unit of the Imperial Special Forces – with Agents Gideon Hask and Del Meeko completing the squad.
The campaign takes place in the STAR WARS galaxy, mostly between the time of RETURN OF THE JEDI and THE FORCE AWAKENS.
With the intention of crushing the Rebellion against his Galactic Empire once and for all, Emperor Palpatine schemes to ensnare an unwary Rebel Alliance into a trap using the second Death Star, under construction above the Forest Moon of Endor, and himself as bait.
The Rebels have captured Iden Versio and are holding her onboard the Rebel Mon Calamari Star Cruiser INVINCIBLE FAITH, with the intent of forcing her to reveal the secret codes that can unlock an intercepted Imperial message. Little do they know that Iden allowed her own capture so that she can delete the message and prevent the Emperor’s plan from being compromised.
She is soon rescued by her droid and manages to successfully delete the transmission. However, she inadvertently sets off an alarm alerting her captives of her escape. She has to battle her way through the ship to a hangar from where she escapes into space to be intercepted by the Inferno Squad flagship CORVUS.
Here, there’s a jump straight into the Battle of Endor, shown in the film RETURN OF THE JEDI, where the EXECUTOR is destroyed and Admiral Piett meets his end as Admiral Garrick Versio looks on.
Iden, together with Inferno Squad agents, Hask and Meeko, manage to cordon of the perimeter of the ruined shield generator and helplessly watch the second Death Star’s destruction as it explodes before their eyes.
The Imperial stormtroopers and ground forces are left stranded on Endor after a full retreat is ordered by Vice Admiral Sloane. Admiral Versio waits on as the Inferno team recovers its TWIN ION ENGINE (TIE) fighters and finally make good their escape from the invading Rebel forces on ENDOR. The Inferno Squad manages to repulse the chasing Rebel bombers who attack the escaping CORVUS.
Later Iden meets with her father on his Star Destroyer EVISCERATOR, who presents her with a Messenger droid above the planet VARDOS and also informs her of the Emperor’s death. The droid shows a hologram with a final command from the late Emperor ordering the immediate launch of OPERATION CINDER. However, the droid refuses to tell her about the intended target as she is not verified for the information.
On the orders of Admiral Versio, Iden finds herself on an Imperial shipyard above the planet FONDOR, entrusted with the task of protecting Moff Raythe and his Star Destroyer DAUNTLESS, vital to the success of OPERATION CINDER.
When the DAUNTLESS is attacked by a Rebel Star Cruiser, Iden and Hask manage to board the Rebel ship and disable its ion cannons. On the orders of Moff Raythe, they then launch an attack on the Imperial shipyard itself, freeing his Star Destroyer from the locked clamps.
Later, the DAUNTLESS destroys the Rebel cruiser in a hail of fire.
Del Meeko is ordered to go to the uninhabited PILLIO to destroy a hidden PALPATINE base.
Here he is attacked and captured by PILLIO’s wildlife but with the help of Luke Skywalker, he is able to disarm the base and repel the native wildlife.
To their surprise, they discover that the base is just a storehouse for PALPATINE’s spoils of war. The two part on a friendly note after Luke advises him to be better than the Empire. Meeko begins to wonder at the real motives of the Empire.
Subsequently, the Inferno Squad is sent to VARDOS to bring back Protectorate Gleb who needs to be saved from OPERATION CINDER which is about to be unleashed on the planet.
OPERATION CINDER satellites soon lunch their destructive forces causing dreadful storms on the planet, just as Iden and her INFERNO SQUAD are trying to evacuate the civilians, Glen included. Meanwhile, Hask betrays them.
Disenchanted with the Empire’s decision to destroy VARDOS, Iden and Meeko escape off world with the civilians. While they are deemed traitors to the Empire, Hask is promoted for successfully retrieving Gleb.
Afterwards, Iden and Del meet with General Lando Calrissian who offers them two options: help stop OPERATION CINDER on NABOO or escape and start their lives afresh. They go with the former option and help Leia Organa in protecting NABOO. OPERATION CINDER satellites are destroyed and the Planet’s defenses reactivated as the Imperial forces attack Theed.
The Planet is finally liberated, with the INFERNO SQUAD joining the New Republic in order to make amends for their indiscretions and help liberate the galaxy.
