The eighth episode in the Star Wars saga and the second film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, after 2015’s The Force Awakens, STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI has drawn a deluge of highly positive reviews.
Box office pundits are predicting a $200 million opening weekend for the film in the United States and Canada alone.
Outside of North America, the weekend collection is expected to cross $220 million. Overall the film needs to gross nearly $800 million to break even, which should be a cakewalk for this eighth installment in the franchise, considering the huge opening response and rave reviews the film has received.
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi honors the saga’s rich legacy while adding some surprising twists—and delivering all the emotion-rich action fans could hope for,” is the critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes website, which has given the film an average rating of 8.2/10 on the site’s “tomatometer,” which speaks for itself.
Metacritic has indicated “universal acclaim,” for the movie giving it 86 out of 100, based on 53 critics.
The Force Awakens’ Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Andy Serkis and Lupita Nyong’o reprise their roles in the film, along with original stars Mark Hamill and the late Carrie Fisher in whose memory the film is dedicated. Joining the ensemble are franchise newcomers Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern and Benicio del Toro.
Resistance fighters led by General Leia Organa manage to evacuate their main base after they are attacked by a First Order fleet, escaping with their vehicles into hyperspace.
After being chastised by First Order’s Supreme Leader Snoke for failing to stop the Resistance evacuation, General Hux begins a long drawn pursuit of the Resistance fighters.
In one particular battle between the two forces, Kylo Ren hesitates to fire on the lead ship of the Resistance forces as he sees his mother Leia onboard.
However, the Order’s TIE fighters attack the ship’s bridge, leaving many Resistance leaders dead and Leia incapacitated. She hands over the command to Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo.
Disgruntled with Leia’s unassertive strategy, Poe, Finn, BB-8 and mechanic Rose Tico make a secret plan to disable the First Order fleet’s tracking device.
Meanwhile, Rey has traveled aboard the Millenium Falcon to Ahch-To where she meets Luke Skywalker, who initially refuses to teach her as Jedi Master, but relents after he learns about Han Solo’s death.
He tells her about the force and about his own failure as a Jedi Master.
As Rey and Kylo are able to communicate secretly, she gets a different version – different from Luke’s account – of the incident that made Kylo join the Order and drove Luke to a hermit’s existence.
She tries to convince Luke into joining the Resistance to no avail and leaves the planet alone to confront Kylo.
Elsewhere, new Resistance commander Holdo talks about her plans to evacuate the remaining Resistance fighters with the help of small transport vehicles.
Unhappy with what he believes is a cowardly plan on the part of Holdo, Poe initiates a rebellion.
When Finn, Rose, and BB-8 infiltrate the lead ship of the First Order along with computer pirate DJ – who they believe can help them disable the tracking device – they are captured by Captain Phasma.
BB-8 somehow manages to make good his escape.
Meanwhile, Rey also ends up a Kylo’s captive on the same ship, where she urges Kylo to betray Snoke. She comes to know from Snoke that it was he who manipulated the mental connection between her and Kylo in order to destroy Luke.
Snoke orders Kylo to kill Rey but Kylo kills him instead and together Rey and Kylo eliminate Snoke’s guards.
Rey declines when Kylo asks for her help to build a new order and asks him to return to the Resistance. However, Rey gets away while Kylo becomes the new Supreme Leader now that Snoke is no more.
By now, Leia is fully recovered and manages to neutralize Poe allowing the evacuation to begin, while Holdo stays back on the main ship providing cover for the others, as they escape to a Rebel Alliance base.
The Order comes to know about their plans and launches an attack on the evacuation transports causing heavy losses, while Holdo rams the lead ship to stop the rout.
BB-8 manages to escape with Rose and Finn after overpowering Captain Phasma and together they join the evacuation survivors.
The ensuing battle sees Poe, Finn, and Rose lead a charge with old speeders but come under heavy First Order fire.
Meanwhile, Luke’s arrival lifts the hopes of the Resistance survivors, who make good their escape while Luke engages Kylo in a duel.
Kylo soon realizes that it’s just Luke’s projection that he is trying to strike down with his lightsaber, while Luke has not even left Ahch-To. He tells Kylo that he will not be the last Jedi.
Rey helps the remaining Resistance members escape the old Rebel Alliance base through old mine tunnels.
Luke dies peacefully on Ahch-To and his body disappears. The surviving Resistance fighters are on board the Falcon as Rey surveys the small group in despair but Leia is hopeful of a new beginning.
